How to Measure
First, figure out how much space you have. Are you replacing a vanity and working within the same footprint? Do existing elements like medicine cabinets or windowsills flimit vanity, sink, or faucet height? Will adding the vanity block the swing of doors? How is the space plumbed? If it’s for one sink, is it centered in the space or off to one side?
Next, take your measurements.
1. If this is a simple replacement, measure the length (side to side), width (front to back) and height (top to bottom) of your current vanity and choose a new one with the same measurements.
2. Measure the full length of the space with which you have to work. Your design may include one or two vanities with a space between, so the full measure is key.
3. Measure the distance of space available from the wall forward to ensure standard vanity widths will fit easily. Remember to leave room for the swing of the bathroom and shower door. You will also want to be able to leave vanity drawers and doors open without being blocked. And don’t forget to include enough space for individuals to move about comfortably in front of the vanity.
4. Height should be measured from the floor to the top of the vanity or, if you’re replacing or planning on a wall-mounted vanity, from the base of the vanity to the top. Think about the height in terms of comfort as well—wall-mounted vanities can be installed at varying heights.
5. If the new vanity is going to cover a different footprint than the old one, you’ll want to consider the flooring under the vanity and whether it will require any updates—especially if transitioning from a floor-standing vanity to a wall-mount model.
